[+] About Promethean Candle Boutique
Our Mission Statement
Promethean Candle Boutique specializes in handmade custom candles. Every candle is poured for our customers each time a candle is ordered. Because of this, we have NO inventory of candles and therefore, each candle you order is guaranteed to be fresh.
Not only that, but you literally have thousands of different combinations to choose from regarding size, shape, color, design and scent. No other candle boutique offers this level of customization. Instead of picking from a limited selection of candles that may or may not fit your needs, you design the candle from the ground up - you design them and we make them.
Our goal here at PCB is to cross the boundaries between quality handmade, functionally adequate candles and true works of art made by real people with the utmost care and attention. We take pride in the quality of our candles and guarantee that each one is made exactly according to your specifications.
The Way Things Work Around Here
When we say custom candles, we really do mean it. Here at Promethean Candle Boutique, we offer you an upgraded twist on shopping for candles. How many times have you browsed through a colleciton of candles just to find that many of them came close to what you were looking for, but none really hit the nail on the head? Our goal here is to create a candle shop where we can literally create any candle that comes to your mind. We're not quite there yet, but we're headed in the right direction.
Just in the pillar candle section alone, there are 400,000 unique candles that candle be created. On the entire website, there are millions, so it's very likely that if you have a certain candle in mind, you can design it here. This may actually sound intimidating. How can you choose from millions of options? It's actually quite simple. In the last year, we've developed an extremely intuitive order form that makes it very easy to create most any candle that you can imagine - and we're not finished.
Just to give you a quick rundown of options that are available in case you haven't looked at our product pages yet or haven't browsed the order forms, here is a quick list. You choose from: 19 pillar candle sizes, 7 containers (candle jars), 45 colors with options for up to 5 layers at horizontal or diagonal angles, 42 candle fragrances, 33 essential oils and aromatherapy essential oil blends, 4 type of wax including soy wax, palm wax and two types of paraffin, and two special lantern style candles.
Obviously this sounds very complicated, but because of our new order forms, it's not. All there is to do is to go through each step and select the appropriate option. You don't even have to fill out the steps in order. You can go back and change options, start over - whatever your heart desires.
Be sure to check out the picture galleries at the bottom of each product page to see examples of various types of candles. Obviously we don't have every conceivable candle in the galleries (we would have had to create millions of candles), but you can get a pretty good idea of what yours will look like.
[+] The Story Of Prometheus
Greek mythology is filled with tales of many gods and heroes. Among them are the Titans, twelve elder gods and goddesses who ruled the heavens and earth in the golden age of Greek legend. They were later overthrown in a great war by twelve younger deities, known as the Olympians, with Zeus being chief among them.
Prometheus is one well-known figure in this colorful pantheon. He was the son of Iapetus, one of the twelve Titans, and thus he often appears as an antagonist to Zeus. He is most famous for stealing fire from Zeus and giving it to humanity, an act for which he was cruelly punished: he was chained to a rock, where his liver was eaten daily by an eagle, only to grow back the next day to be eaten again. His torment was ended when he was released by the hero Heracles.
These are the broad strokes of the story of Prometheus, but the poets and philosophers differ on the finer details. Hesiod, who first told the story, painted Prometheus as a trickster who deceived Zeus, and Zeus in his anger hid fire from mankind. Aeschylus, though, shows us Prometheus as a culture hero, bringing not only fire but all the arts of civilization to mankind, and preventing Zeus in his wrath from destroying humanity. Still other tellers of the tale provided more details, such as Prometheus’s creation of human beings. As in the Judeo-Christian tradition and many other traditions around the world, it is said that Prometheus mixed water and earth and fashioned humans with his own hands.
The many versions of this tale reflect humanity’s complex feelings about fire, civilization, and life itself. Was he a trickster, deceiving the gods and bringing down their wrath on humans, thus making our lives the cycle of toil and burden it is now? Was he a culture hero, the savior of humanity and originator of culture, our finest achievement? Perhaps he was both, like the fire he brought to us. Without fire we have no warmth, no light, no cooked food, no life. But out of our control, fire is a raging beast. Perhaps this is why Prometheus is so hard to define—because he represents the fire inside each of us, the fire that makes us human.
It is this fire of life that Promethean Candles seeks to capture. Take a closer look at that candle. The small flame at the end of the wick is the very same fire that Prometheus stole from the gods on Olympus and brought to us in the mists of legend, and the candle that houses that flame was made in the same way that Prometheus was said to have fashioned humans: with hands of artistry, dedication, and vision.
[+] Frequently Asked Questions
If you have any questions that are not addressed on this page, please do not hesitate to contact us through our contact form or call us at 914-419-4819.
Our office hours are Mon-Fri 9am to 6pm.
Do you offer custom candles that do not appear on the site?
The short answer to that question is yes, we most certainly do. However, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to fill your order. If there is a size or shape that we do not have, or a container candle that does not appear on the site, chances are we will be able to make that candle.
However, since we will have to acquire molds or extra materials there is usually a minimum purchase required most often in the form of quantity. For example, if you wanted a 5" diameter by 5" height soy candle scented with a fragrance we do not carry, we will not charge you for the acquisition of the extra materials, but you may have to buy 7 or 8 of that same candle. This is simply so that we can stay in business and continue to offer you quality handmade custom candles.
Can you send samples of custom candles before I place a larger order?
No. Each candle that we make is hand poured per order, so most of what you're paying for when you buy a custom made candle is labor, not materials. However, if you are planning to place a very large order such as 50 or 70 candles, you can put down a non-refundable deposit that would go towards your purchase if you were to go through with the purchase.
Do you offer free samples of your products?
No. Only companies that have large inventories of products can afford to do that. We do not have an inventory since each of our candles are hand poured per order.
Do you offer discounts on bulk purchases?
Yes, absolutely. For our retail customers, on each product page, the last step in designing your candle is the quantity. To the right is a table that states the quantity discounts for that type of candle. Keep in mind that different discounts apply to different types of candles. For instance, if you were to order 5 one color pillar candles, you would save 10%, but if you were to order 5, 4 layer pillar candles, you would save 20%
Please also keep in mind that the quantity discount applies only per individual item. In other words, you need to order the exact same candle. If, say those pillar candles all had different fragrances, you would not qualify for a quantity discount. The reason for this is simple. When we make more than one of the same candle, we can pour those candles in one batch. This saves us labor and we pass those savings on to you.
Do you offer wholesale to businesses?
Yes, we do offer wholesale prices to businesses. Keep in mind though that all of our products are handmade so the wholesale price will not be as low as with factory made products. In addition, we do not offer discounted shipping as we do with regularly discounted retail sales. Because of this, very often the difference between wholesale and quantity discounted retail is negligable.
If you're interested in buying whole, please contact us.
How long will it take me to receive my candles?
We are currently running a promotion where we guarantee* you will receive your candles in 10 business days from the day you order if the order is place before 1pm. If the order is placed after 1pm, then it is 10 days from the next business day.
We also offer rushed production for an additional fee. When you select ruched production, we guarantee* your candles will arrive within 7 business days from the day you order if the order is placed before 1pm. If the oder is placed after 1pm, then it is 7 days from the next business day.
Please see shipping section for complete details on our current promotion.
Keep in mind, you may receive your candle well before 10 business days. It depends on the size of your order and our current workload. If you need to receive your candles by a specific date, please contact us before placing an order.
*99% of the time, any package send to anywhere in the continental US will not take more than 5 business day. Our guarantee is based on that assumption. All packages are shipped UPS and can be tracked on their site. If a package takes longer than 5 business days to arrive, we cannot take responsibility for the late arrival.
Will I be charged sales tax?
Only New York residents will be charged sales tax. The sales tax rate will be listed in the shopping cart before you check out.
Can you send me a catalog?
We do not currently have a printed catalog, however our full catalog is available for viewing on the products page of this website.
I don't like using my credit card online. Is your shopping cart secure?
Yes, it is very secure. When you go to checkout, you will see the "https://" in the address bar which proves that the page is secure. Our merchant is PayPals Website Payments Pro. Unless you are ordering custom candles that are not available on the site, the only way to place an order is through the website.
Can I change or cancel my order once it has been placed?
Our production process typically begins within 24 hours after the order has been placed. Orders can only be changed or cancelled before the production process has begun. If you would like to change or cancel your order, it would be best to call us immediately at 914-419-4819, and we will do our best to accommodate you. However, once we have begun the production process, your order cannot be changed or cancelled.
Is there any sort of guarantee?
We guarantee that your order will be made exactly as it was ordered. If we have made your order incorrectly or if the order is defective, we will either give you a complete refund or remake your order. Please see our return policy for complete details.

[+] Pillar Candles
Soy Wax Pillar Candles
Our soy pillar candles are completely natural, and arguably have the best burning properties of all the pillar candle waxes. A soy pillar candle cannot be made from only pure soy wax. This type of wax is not hard enough in its pure form to hold the shape of a pillar. All soy pillar waxes are a mixture of soy wax and other ingredients. Here at Promethean Candle, we use an all natural blend called Ecosoya PB, that contains a vast majority of soy wax and carefully selected botanical oils including palm oil. This blend does not contain paraffin and is a completely vegetable based wax blend. However, if you are looking for a pure soy wax candle, check out our aromatherapy candles.
Many people prefer the opaque, creamy aesthetic of soy pillar candles. The colors take on what can be described as a pastel appearance. You can choose just one color or you can create a layered candle with multiple colors. You can even choose to have diagonal layers - it's all up to you.
Soy pillar candles work very well with fragrance and we highly recommend scenting your candle. However, we realize that everyone has their own idea of how scented a scented candle should be, so we've provided you with three options: unscented, scented or super-scented. Our unscented soy candles burn with a light scent of soy wax, which most people consider odorless. Regularly scented candles are strong enough, but not too strong. If you're looking for heavily scented candles such as those produced by Yankee Candle, you'll be happy with our super-scented candles.
Palm Wax Pillar Candles
Our palm wax candles are truly stunning and something you really have to see to believe. So instead of describing these crystal-esque pillar candles, check out the picture gallery above to get a good look at some sparkling beauties. Because of the crystalline structure, palm wax is very hard when in its solid state. Due to this fact, palm wax pillar candles are made from pure palm wax - no other ingredients or additives!
These candles have a burn time somewhere between paraffin and soy wax as you can see in the Burn Times chart below. One thing many people enjoy about our palm wax candles is that it produces a very large, bright flame compared to paraffin and especially soy wax. If you like a larger flame that tends to flicker with some frequency, palm wax candles are for you. For a steadier and softer flame, our soy wax candles will suit you best.
Palm wax pillar candles, when unscented, burn completely odorless. Palm wax can hold more fragrance than any other wax, so if you're going to super-scent a candle, try the palm wax candles.
Mottled & Regular Paraffin Pillar Candles
These days, when it comes to paraffin candles, mottled candles are the preferred choice. If you're not familiar with mottled candles, check out the gallery above to get a good look at the most popular paraffin candle on the market. The mottling effect is actually caused by the migration of the fragrance oils in the wax. In fact, mottled candles preceded regular or "classic" paraffin candles.
Additives are used in the regular or "classic" paraffin candles to prevent mottling and to give the candle a clean, glossy look. The additives used such as stearic acid and Vybar also increase the hardness of the wax and therefore slightly increases the burn time of the candle.
Probably the best feature of paraffin candles are how brightly the colors shine, especially in our regular paraffin candles. In the mottled candles, the color is accompanied by a white, snowflake texture throughout the body of the candle.
Scented or unscented, the flame of a paraffin candle burns brighter than soy wax but not quite as bright as a palm wax candle, though the flame does tend to be a bit steadier than that of a palm wax candle. When burning paraffin candles, make sure your room is well ventilated since paraffin candles do produce carbon based soot that can dirty your walls and ceiling.
Fragrances
We use the best FDA approved fragrances on the market. Many of our fragrances are custom PCB blends, but we purchase all of our base fragrances from Nature's Garden. In fact, if you're looking for a fragrance that we do not carry, check out the previous link and you can bet that they have it. We are always willing to do custom orders for customers buying more than just a few candles. Be sure to contact us before placing an order if you need candles scented with a fragrance that we do not have in stock.
All the fragrances we use are safe perfumes, but cannot be confused with essential oils. Essential oils are the pure oils that are extracted from many types of plants including lavendar, chamomile, rose, etc. The fragrances that we use in our pillar and jar candles have essential oils in them, but are mixed with other ingredients. If you are interested in candles made with only pure, therapeutic grade essential oils, be sure to check out our Aromatherapy Candles, Inclusion Candles and Hanji Candles. Here, you can experience a truly revitalizing aromatherapy experience. If aromatherapy isn't your thing - no problem. All of our candles except the Aromatherapy Candles are available with regular fragrances.
Burning Instructions
- Before lighting your pillar candle for the first time, make sure that the wick is trimmed from an eighth to a quarter inch depending on the type of wax. Mottled paraffin tends to do well when trimmed closer to an eighth of an inch and regular paraffin just slightly longer. Soy pillar candles burn best when the wick is a quarter inch. Palm wax candle wicks should be somewhere in between.
Just remember, the longer the wick, the larger the flame. So if the flame is too big and begins to produce soot, trim it. If the flame is too small, pour some wax out of the candle and don't trim it as short next time.
- The first time you burn your candle is the most important. Make sure to burn your candle for the maximum time recommended in the following step. If the candle is burned for less time, the wax pool will not be big enough and the candle will not burn properly.
- Recommended burn times:
Two inch diameter: 90 minutes to 2 hours
Three inch diameter: 2.5 hours to 3.5 hours
Four inch diameter: 4 to 5 hours
Six inch diameter (3 wick): 4 to 5 hours
Note: Be careful when burning soy pillar candles. It is recommended that you not burn a two inch diameter soy pillar candle for more than 90 minutes, and a three inch candle for more than 3 hours. Due to the nature of the soy wax, it is difficult to stop the candle from dripping once it starts. If this does happen, burn the candle for very short intervals until the wax pool is below the spot where the candle has dripped.
- If you want to burn your candle for more than the recommended time, extinguish the flame when the maximum recommended time is reached, let the wax pool cool and set, and then relight the candle.
- When extinguishing your candle, it is a good idea to use a snuffer as opposed to blowing it out. The less smoke produced when extinguishing your candle, the better the wick will hold up.
If you are blowing out the candle, put your hand six inches behind the flame and blow very gently being careful not to blow the melted wax. Then wet your index finger and thumb and pinch the wick to stop it from smoking. Be careful not to break the wick when extinguishing a soy candle since soy wicks are more brittle than paraffin or palm wax.
Safety Tips
- Never leave pillar candles burning unattended.
- When burning a pillar candle, either place on a non-flammable surface or place on a candle holder. Never burn pillar candles on or near a flammable object.
- Never leave any flammable material in the wax pool (the melted wax) such as wick trimmings. This is not only dangerous, but decreases the quality of the burn.
- Keep burning candles away from children or pets.
- Don't burn candles for much more than the recommended time. This is more of a suggestion than a rule, but be aware that burning a 2 inch diameter candle for six hours is dangerous.
- Be especially careful when burning pillar candles as they can easily tip over. Take whatever steps are necessary to prevent this from happening.

[+] Jar Candles
Soy Wax Jar Candles
Our jar or container candles are made with a more pure soy wax blend than the pillar candles since they do not have to hold a free standing shape. These candles contain around 96% pure soy wax because they are contained and do not have to hold the shape of a pillar like the pillar soy candles. The remaining 4% contain carefully selected botanical oils to help prevent frosting. This frosting happens with pure soy wax due to temperature changes and is much more noticeable with colored wax than with non-colored soy wax. For this reason, we use a soy blend in our jar candles and pure soy wax in our Aromatherapy Candles which are not colored. Some frosting may still occur with this soy wax blend.
The appearance of these soy candles mimic almost exactly the appearance of paraffin jar candles. For this reason, we only offer soy wax and palm wax container candles. Paraffin jar candles tend to smoke and produce a lot of soot. This most often leads to black soot on the jar, on the walls and on the ceiling (not to mention, in your lungs). Soy produces very little soot, and the soot it does produce is not carcinogenic. Soy candles also last up to 150% longer than paraffin candles.
Soy jar candles contain from 20 to 50% more fragrance than pillar candles since they do not have to hold a free standing shape. If you are sensitive to heavy fragrances or simply don't want to scent your entire house with just one candle, our regular scented jar candles will do you just fine. If you like a rich, heavy fragrance and want to fill a large area with scent, you might want to try super-scenting your candle. In this case, simply check the "super-scented" option in step 4.
Palm Wax Jar Candles
Palm wax is a truly unique wax that you really have to see to understand. Take a look at the palm wax candles in our Jar Candle Gallery and you will see what I'm talking about. The crystal effect is even more pronounced than it is in our Pillar Candles. The colors shine very brightly and are accentuated by the glass of the container. We currently offer 5 beautiful glass containers (with more on the way) and 2 brushed aluminum travel tins. As always, our specialty is custom made candles, so if you have a specific container in mind that we do not carry, we will do our best to accommodate you for larger orders.
Jar palm wax candles will burn brighter than soy candles and the flame will flicker a bit more. If those characteristics appeal to you, then palm wax is the wax you want to go. If you want a softer flame that burns a bit steadier and a candle that burns a little longer, then soy wax is going to be the way you want to go.
If fragrance is your concern, our palm wax container candles hold the same amount of fragrance as our soy wax container candles - anywhere from 20 to 50% more than our pillar candles. If you enjoy nice soothing scents that aren't overpowering, go with our regular scented candles. If you are looking for something a bit more powerful, you might want to try super-scenting your candle by checking the appropriate box in step 4.
Fragrances
Only the best FDA approved fragrances are used in our jar candles. Many scents available in our candles are our own proprietary blend, but we purchase all of our base fragrances from Nature's Garden. In case you don't find a fragrance that suits you in step 4 above, we encourage you to check out Nature's Garden very diverse selection. We are always willing to fill custom orders for customers multiple candles. Please contact us before you place your order if you would like to purchase jar candles with a fragrance that we do not have in stock.
Although the fragrances we use are quite safe, do not confuse them with essential oils. Many of the fragrances we use do have essential oils in them, but they are combined with other ingredients. If you are interesting in enjoying the pure tranquility of pure, therapeutic grade essential oils, check out our Aromatherapy Candles, Inclusion Candles and Hanji Candles. Here you can choose from 33 different essential oils and essential oil blends for a true aromatherapy experience. Not interested in aromatherapy? All of our candles with the exception of our Aromatherapy Candles are available with regular fragrance.
Burning Instructions
The great thing about jar candles as opposed to pillar candles is there are far fewer rules to follow when burning them. If you just want to light a candle and not worry about it too much, then jar candles are for you. But remember, a fire is fire and should be treated with respect.
- Before lighting your jar candle for the first time, be sure to trim your wick to about a quarter of an inch. This is an estimate and you may find that you like the way a candle burns with the wick trimmed shorter or longer. In general however, palm wax jar candles usually burn better when they are trimmed a bit shorter than soy wax jar candles.
As a rule, the larger the wick, the larger the flame and the more it flickers. The shorter the wick, the shorter the flame and the steadier the burn. Obviously, the larger flame will burn the candle down more quickly.
- It's usually a good idea, especially with palm wax candles, to burn your candle for a significant amount of time the first time you burn it. The wax pool has memory and if don't burn your candle long enough the first time, your candle might not burn properly and instead, burn down the center. This effect is more pronounced with pillar candles, but is still somewhat important with jar candles.
- Each time you burn your candle after the first time, it's a good idea to burn it for at least the length of time it takes the melted wax pool to reach near the edge of the candle. If you burn your candle for very short periods of time, it will not last very long as there will be wax left on the sides. Unlike pillar candles, there really is no maximum burn time for jar candles. Even so, below are recommended burn times that will help to maximize the longevity of your jar candle.
12 ounce Glass Cube: 2 to 4 hours
21 ounce Glass Cube: 3 to 6 hours
16 ounce Glass Flared Square: 3 to 6 hours
20 ounce Glass Footed Square: 3 to 5 hours
12 ounce Glass Status Jar: 2 to 4 hours
8 ounce Travel Tin: 1 to 3 hours
16 ounce Travel Tin: 2 to 4 hours - When extinguishing your candle, it's a good idea to use a snuffer. This puts out the flame by taking away oxygen as opposed to blowing on it which adds oxygen and causes the wick to smoke. However, not everyone has a candle snuffer. So if you are blowing out your candles, put your hand about 6 inches behind the flame, blow on it gently enough whereas not to spill the melted wax, and immediately wet your fingers and pinch the wick to stop the smoking.
Safety Tips
- Although jar candles are considered to be much safer than pillar candles, you should still never leave a candle burning unattended.
- Never burn your candle near flammable objects, especially objects that might hang over the candle like plants or flowers.
- Never leave any flammable material, such as wick trimmings, in the wax pool.
- This may sound rather obvious, but never ever put anything on top of the jar while the candle is burning. Even if the flame is low, a piece of paper will catch fire in mere seconds.
- Keep burning candles away from children or pets.

[+] Aromatherapy Candles
Aromatherapy & Essential Oils
Aromatherapy definition: A form of alternative medicine centered around the use of essential oils that are derived from the flowers, leaves, rind or flesh of certain plants thought to have specific healing properties.
Despite what you may think, all products that carry the label "aromatherapy" do not always use essential oils and can therefore not be considered to provide true aromatherapy. Here at PCB, our aromatherapy candles use ONLY the highest quality therapeutic grade essential oils. We use ONLY pure soy wax, pure palm wax and 100% cotton wicks. There is absolutely nothing that is not natural in our aromatherapy candles.
The practice of aromatherapy dates back 5000 years ago to the early Egyptians. In recent years, aromatherapy has really taken off with the increased production of essential oils. Aromatherapy candles are the latest addition to the time-tested ancient practice.
Aromatherapy Soy Wax & Palm Wax Candles
If your only interest is in aromatherapy and not aesthetics, we recommend using our aromatherapy soy candles. The use of soy wax and essential oils simply works the best. The reason for this is because soy wax burns cooler than any other wax. Because of this, soy candles disperse fragrance into the air slowly and steadily. This is ideal when it comes to aromatherapy since you don't want to be overwhelmed with too much "aroma" all at once. The idea is to slowly take in the fragrance from the essential oils over a period of time.
That being said, palm wax aromatherapy candles can be used just as effectively. Just place the candle further away from you and make sure the room is well ventilated. Palm wax burns hotter than soy wax, so the fragrance is released into the air on a less consistent basis.
Due to the fact that we use pure soy wax with our aromatherapy soy candles, over time, the outside of the candle may become frosted. This is actually a good way to tell if a candle is truly made from 100% pure soy wax. When soy wax cools, the molecular structure of the wax changes and produces a frosted effect. This is why we use an all natural soy wax blend for our regular jar candles.
Burning Instructions
The following is a suggested way to use your PCB aromatherapy candles; it is by no means the only way you can use them. When you are not using these candles for aromatherapy and simply using them as a jar candle, please see the jar candle buring instructions.
- Find a quiet place.
Before lighting your candle, it is very important that you find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. For some of you, this may be a challenge, but it is integral to the experience. If there is no place else, just go into the bathroom and lock the door behind you. - Set aside at least 30 minutes.
Aromatherapy is something that you should not rush. Although short periods of time can be of some benefit, to get the full effect, 30 minutes to an hour is recommended. - Relax and enjoy.
Relaxation is the most important step here. If you're not relaxed, the stress will prevent a fully beneficial experience. Just sit back and be in the moment. Let all your worries leave your mind and focus on what you're experiencing right now. - Breathe deeply.
A good way to be in the moment as well as get the most from the physical aspect of aromatherapy is to breathe slowly and deeply. It may even be helpful to do breathing exercises. If you can, breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. - Be positive.
Aromatherapy cannot be thought of in the same way most people think of modern medicine. It's not like a pill you can swallow. It's important to be positive and believe that whatever physical, mental or emotional problem can be cured. Aromatherapy is meant to assist you in making your life better and to enable you to make those changes yourself. - Let it go.
After you are through, let it go. Don't dwell on whether or not it worked or didn't work. Just be positive and continue your day. After time, you will see that aromatherapy does work.

[+] Himalayan Salt Candles
Therapeutic Benefits of Himalayan Salt
Himalayan salt candles are an alternative to Himalayan salt lamps. Currently we have one vessel that is about 4 inches tall and 2.5 to 3 inches wide. Our salt candle vessels are made from pure Himalayan salt and can vary in color from a dark pink to slightly pink to almost translucent white.
The theory that being in the proximity of Himalayan salt is therapeutic comes from the belief that negative ions have a positive effect on the body and mind. In everyday life we are surrounded by technological appliances such as air conditioners, computers, microwave ovens, televisions, stereos, heaters, etc. All these things emit positive ions into the air. Positive ions can cause us to feel tired and stressed and are thought to affect our overall health and wellness adversely.
On the contrary, have you ever noticed how you feel when you get outside for a nice walk in the park? Have you noticed how differently you feel when you’re able to take a vacation to the country and breathe in some fresh mountain air? You feel better. This is because there are fewer positive ions and more negative ions in the air.
It’s an established fact that negative ions are beneficial. But what about Himalayan salt candles or lamps? Despite thousands of testimonials giving examples of how Himalayan salt candles and lamps have beneficially affected them, as of yet, there is no peer reviewed, scientific data to back up these claims. This could mean one of two things: there are no actual benefits from being in the proximity of Himalayan salt candles or the science is not quite mainstream enough yet. There was also a time that chiropractors were considered to be quacks. Now chiropractic therapy is covered by many health insurance plans.
How Do They Work?
Himalayan salt candles work very simply. We pour pure soy wax into a Himalayan salt vessel. You choose the fragrance or essential oil. When the soy wax burns for a long enough period of time, the salt is heated up and negative ions are released into the air. If you are in the general proximity of the candle, about 6 feet, you will be in contact with these negative ions.
There is a marked difference between Himalayan salt candles and Himalayan salt lamps however. A salt lamp is heated by a single, small low wattage light bulb so the salt never gets very hot. With a salt candle, an actual flame is used and the salt container gets very hot. In fact it is a good idea to put the candle on a heat resistant holder because you may burn your wooden or plastic table if it’s in direct contact. Also be very careful when touching the candle so that you don’t burn yourself.
The reason why salt candles might be more effective than salt lamps is because of the amount of heat produced. Some people make the argument that the heat generated from the single light bulb used to heat the salt lamp is not sufficient to dislodge the negative ions from the crystalline structure of the salt. The heat generated from an open flame is much hotter and therefore the negative ions are more likely to be dislodged and released into the air when using a Himalayan salt candle.
There is much research to be done regarding negative ions related to Himalayan salt products, and even if you don’t believe there is a therapeutic benefit, you won’t find a more beautiful candle holder and spectacular light display in a dark room than with a Himalayan salt candle.
Burning Instructions & Safety Tips
- Before lighting, be sure that your candle wick is trimmed to about a quarter inch.
- Never leave your candle burning unattended.
- Each time you burn your salt candle, it's a good idea to burn it from 2 to 4 hours so that the salt is heated up sufficiently enough to be effective.
- For the salt candle to be therapeutically effective, you should be within a six foot radius of the candle while it is burning.
- Always be sure to place your salt candle on a heat resistant, non-flammable surface.
- Do not place any flammable object on or near the salt candle while it is burning.
- Keep lit Himalayan salt candles out of reach of children and pets.
[+] Inclusion Hurricanes
Inclusion Hurricanes
Our unique inclusion candles are much like wax hurricane candle holders that are already filled with pure soy wax, fragrance or essential oils and a cotton wick. So instead of putting small pillar candles, tea lights or votives in the holder, the candle is already there for you to burn. These are special custom candles so be sure to read the instructions below before burning them.
The shell of the inclusion candle is made from a specially treated hard paraffin wax that resists melting. Within this wax, objects are permenently embedded in the wax. Objects include items such as various types of blown and stained glass, stones, moss and coffee beans.
Once the candle has burned down a bit, it works very much like a lantern or a hurricane candle holder as the light shines through the inclusions and the translucent wax. When the candle has burned down almost completely, you can place tea lights or votives in the shell if you wish to keep the holder.
The inclusion candle is one of three different types of lantern or hurricane candles that are available with either regular fragrance or essential oils so you can indulge in a fantastic aromatherapy experience with the lights turned down or simply burn the candle during the night while reading. Either way, you won't find candles like this anywhere.
Burning Instructions
This is not your typical candle that you can simply light and let burn. In order to get the most out of your inclusion candle it is very important that you follow the instructions below.
- Before lighting, make sure the wick is trimmed to a quarter to an eighth inch.
- The first few times you burn your inclusion candle, burn it for only one hour each time. This goes contrary to most other candles because it causes the candle to burn down the center. However, in this case, that is the preferred outcome.
- Once the candle is burned down a bit, the recommeded burn time is around 90 minutes. This is to prevent the outer wax shell from melting. You can usually get away with a two hour burn or even more, but be sure to keep an eye on the candle to make sure the sides don't melt.
- As a rule, the further the candle burns down, the less time you will be able to burn your candle without melting the sides.
- When the bottom is reached, if you wish to keep the inclusion shell, you can place tea lights or votives (tea lights are recommended) at the bottom of the candle and use the candle as a hurricane candle holder.
Safety Tips
- Never, ever leave an inclusion candle burning unattended.
- Always make sure to put the inclusion candle on a non-flammable surface.
- Never leave any flammable material near or on the inclusion candle when it is burning.
- When burning an inclusion candle that is embedded with flammable material, keep a very close eye on the candle when burning it.
- Keep burning inclusion candles away from children and pets.
[+] Hanji Hurricanes
Hanji Hurricanes
These beautiful hanji candles are very much like hurricane candle holders made from wax. However, these candles come ready to burn, filled with pure soy wax, a pure cotton wick and your choice of either your favorite candle fragrance or therapeutic grade essential oils. With a regular hurricane candle, you must put a small pillar candle, votive or tea light inside the candle holder. These are special custom candles so be sure to read the instructions below before burning them.
The shell that surrounds the inner soy pillar candle is made from a specially treated hard paraffin wax that is heat resistant. Surrounding the hard paraffin shell, embedded within the outer layer of wax is a special type of paper called hanji. Currently, we offer 10 types of hanji candles. Our hanji is imported directly from South Korea. To learn more about hanji, please read the section below.
When the inner soy candle has burned down a bit, this custom candle works very much like a lantern or hurricane candle. The light from the candle shines through the translucent wax and the hanji and is quite beautiful. When the soy wax is mostly used, you can place votives or tea lights in them and enjoy the lantern for many months.
The hanji candle is one of three different types of lantern or hurricane candles. They are available with pure, therapeutic grade essential oils or your favorite candle fragrance. Turn the lights down and enjoy the soft, soothing light or use these hanji candles to experience a truly spectacular aromatherapy experience. Whichever you decide, you won't find candles like this anywhere.
Hanji: Handmade Korean Paper
Hanji traces its origins to the invention of paper in China in the second century. These skills and techniques made their way to Korea by the seventh century before spreading to the rest of East Asia. “Hanji” literally means “Korean paper,” and although it shares much in common with its Chinese predecessor and other East Asian paper, it has a uniquely Korean flavor.
Hanji is made from the bark of the paper mulberry (Broussonetia kazinoki), which is harvested in late autumn and then boiled, cleaned, and bleached. Then it is soaked in a solution of lime and ash to produce a workable pulp, and herein lies one of hanji’s secrets. While most Western paper is acidic, the lime and ash solution make hanji alkaline. Most Western paper yellows as time passes, but hanji will never yellow, and it can last for over a thousand years; the oldest hanji still in existence today is a copy of a Buddhist sutra that dates back to at least 751, making it over 1200 years old.
In the next stage, the pulp is beaten with a bat or club to soften the fibers even further. This is another important characteristic of hanji: while traditional Chinese techniques call for grinding the plant fibers, the fibers in hanji are left whole, both giving the finished paper an elegant, natural look and making it strong and durable.
The beaten pulp is then mixed with natural adhesives in water, and a large wooden and bamboo-screen frame is dipped into the mixture. When the frame is lifted from the mixture, the liquid drains and leaves a thin layer of fibers and adhesive. The pliable bamboo screen is lifted off the frame and the wet paper is piled up in stacks of hundreds of sheets. The stacks are pressed down to extract as much water as possible, and then each individual sheet is dried on a hot, flat metal surface.
Hanji comes in many different forms, from plain white paper to colored paper, paper embedded with other materials such as leaves and bark, and even decorative paper that resembles lace. It has long been used in Korea for a variety of purposes: for printing and writing, of course, but also for papering doors and windows and creating objects such as fans and kites. Hanji crafts are still popular today, with hanji being used to make everything from lamps to decorative boxes. Promethean Candle Boutique continues this age-old tradition with its line of Hanji Candles.
Burning Instructions
Keep in mind that these candles should not be burned like a regular jar candle. To get the most out of your hanji candle it is vital that you closely follow the instructions given in the steps below.
- Be sure that you trim the wick to a quarter to an eighth inch before lighting the candle.
- For the first couple of times you use your hanji candle, only burn it for one hour at a time. Normally, you would not do this because you risk burning your candle right down the center, however, with hanji candles, that is exactly what you want to do.
- When the soy wax in the candle has burned down a half inch, the suggested burn time is around 90 minutes. These strict burn times are suggested to help prevent the outer paraffin shell from melting. Although it is treated to resist melting, it is still wax and it will melt. You may be able to get away with a 2 hour burn or so, just keep an eye on the shell.
- When the inner soy pillar candle starts to get towards the bottom of the shell (about 3 inches down), you may have to shorten your burn times to prevent the sides from melting.
- When you've reached the metal tab, you're at the bottom of the soy candle. Now you can place tea lights or votives (we recommend tea lights) in the hurricane holder and enjoy your candle for many months.
Safety Tips
- Don't leave hanji candles burning unattended.
- Never burn the hanji candle on a flammable surface.
- Burn your hanji candle away from all flammable material.
- Don't burn your candle for more than the recommended time as the paper could catch fire.
- Keep burning hanji candles away from children and pets.

[+] Wax and Wicks
There are two ingredients that are necessary for making a candle burn: wax and wicks. You can't have one without the other if you're planning to light a candle. Wax is the air that feeds the flame and the wick is the fuel that burns. Here is some information on the different types of wax we use and our 100% cotton wicks.
[+] Paraffin Wax
Paraffin wax has been used to make candles for over 150 years. You have your choice between regular paraffin, or mottled paraffin wax which produces a unique random "snowflake" effect. In actuality, all paraffin mottles to some extent. What is considered "regular paraffin" contains paraffin additives that serve to reduce and/or eliminate the mottling. Paraffin waxes that are made to mottle contain a higher oil content. This helps the wax mottle since mottling is actually the migration of oils in the wax. The higher the oil content, the more the wax mottles.
Depending on what type of candle you're looking at, different types of paraffin may be used. In our Layered Pillars, the wax of choice is a paraffin wax that is specially formulated to produce a "mottling" effect. In actuality, straight paraffin naturally mottles, and additives are added to eliminate the mottling effect when it is not desired. In our inclusion candles, we use an all natural soy blend wax for the center pillar, and for the shell, we use special high melt point paraffin so that the shell does not melt when you burn your candle. This way you are left with a reusable candle holder after you have finished burning your candle.
[+] Mottled Paraffin
Over the last decade, mottled paraffin has become increasingly popular and continues to grow in popularity. This specially formulated, high oil content paraffin produces a unique "snowflake" or "crackled" effect. This crackling or mottling is actually an effect created by the migration of the oils in the wax and also in the fragrance used to scent the candle. This gives the candle it's unique, rustic and natural appearance sought after by many.
Here at Promethean Candle Boutique, we have perfected the mottling effect in our mottled candles from being a randomized, unintentional effect to a more uniformed effect that takes place throughout the candle.
[+] Regular Paraffin
Regular, or non-mottling paraffin wax has been the standard wax used for making candles for the better part of the last 150 years. This wax produces a beautiful opaque, glossy finish. In contrast to the mottled paraffin, regular paraffin is clean and classy with no, or very few imperfections.
Straight paraffin mottles when no additives are used. Additives such as stearic acid and/or vybar are used to prevent mottling and produce a clean, smooth and opaque look with a shiny or glossy finish. These additives also serve to improve the burning properties of the candle.
[+] All Natural Soy Wax
Soy wax is an entirely vegetable based wax that is environmentally sound and does not produce petro-carbon soot and contains no herbicides or pesticides. It is a renewable resource, unlike paraffin which is derived from petroleum. Soy wax is biodegradable and is also easier to clean up since it tends not to stain surfaces like paraffin does. Soy wax is also better for the US economy since soy crops are grown in the United States.
Soy wax also looks and feels much different than paraffin wax. It has a more viscous texture and without the addition of colorants, has a milky opaque finish unlike the translucent finish of straight paraffin. It is also known to hold more fragrance than paraffin wax. When colorants are used, the colors are more vibrant than colored paraffin wax. More importantly, soy wax burns slower and cooler than paraffin wax, creating a longer burning candle. Depending on the wax, soy wax can burn 30% to 50% longer than paraffin.
[+] All Natural Palm Wax
Like soy wax, palm wax is an all natural, environmentally friendly vegetable based wax. It is a renewable resource that is obtained from the oil palm in Southeast Asia. Palm wax is an excellent material for candles since it has a very high melt point compared to all other waxes. It resists melting during the hotter summer months and also has a long burn time, but burns hotter than soy wax. The palm wax used in our candles is 100% palm wax and requires no additives. It also can hold very high concentrations of fragrance.
Unlike any other candle wax, palm wax naturally produces a feathering and crystallizing effect. The palm wax used in Promethean Candles will actually appear to change shades as you rotate it in the light - a truly beautiful effect.
[+] 100% Cotton Wicks
Promethean Candle Boutique uses only 100% cotton wicks to ensure that your candles burn cleanly. We have tested many different types of wicks with many different types of wax and have found, through trial and error, which wicks work best with which waxes to produce a clean and long lasting burn. We use both square braided, flat braided and other specially braided wicks depending on the candle. We do not use pre-coated wicks that are normally coated with a high melt point paraffin wax, so if you are buying a natural wax candle, you will only be burning natural wax.
